1. Purpose

To establish a transparent, equitable, and performance-driven process for selecting Basketball Nova Scotia (BNS) Provincial Team coaches while ensuring alignment with BNS standards, organizational values, and athlete development objectives.

BNS is committed to building strong, consistent, and high-performance Provincial Team programs while providing opportunities for coaches to develop and contribute to the growth of basketball in Nova Scotia.

2. Coaching Staff

Each Provincial Team will be assigned the following coaching staff:

  • Head Coach
  • Assistant Coach
  • Second Assistant Coach / Team Manager

Head Coaches are encouraged to identify and recommend their own Assistant Coaches as part of the application and selection process. All proposed Assistant Coaches must be submitted to BNS for review and vetting prior to appointment.

BNS will conduct the appropriate screening and review of all proposed coaching staff and reserves the right to approve or decline any proposed Assistant Coach based on qualifications, screening results, conflicts of interest, program needs, or other relevant considerations.

If a Head Coach does not have preferred Assistant Coaches, BNS may work with the Head Coach to identify suitable candidates.

Teams requesting additional team staff must submit a written request to BNS outlining:

  • Rationale for additional staff
  • Proposed role and responsibilities
  • How the position supports team operations and/or athlete development

Approval of additional staff is at the discretion of BNS.

3. Selection Process Timeline

  • Coach Applications: Applications open in July/August, with applications due in August
  • Head Coach Selection: Head Coaches selected and confirmed in September
  • Open Identification Session #1: Held in late September
  • Open Identification Session #2: Held in December
  • Invite-Only Tryouts: Invite-only player selection sessions held in March
  • Provincial Teams Selected: Final teams confirmed by April

Head Coaches will be selected in September to allow sufficient time to work with BNS staff, plan identification sessions, and prepare for the player selection process.

Head Coaches will be involved throughout the identification and selection process and will have the opportunity to recommend Assistant Coaches. All proposed Assistant Coaches must be vetted and approved by BNS before appointment.

The Coach Selection Committee will be comprised of appropriate BNS staff and/or Performance Leads as determined by BNS.

Interviews may be conducted in person or virtually.

Step 5 — Assistant Coach Selection

Head Coaches are encouraged to recommend their preferred Assistant Coaches.

All recommendations must be submitted to BNS for review and approval. BNS will vet all proposed Assistant Coaches to ensure they meet the required qualifications, screening standards, certification requirements, and expectations of the Provincial Team Program.

Final appointment of all Assistant Coaches is subject to BNS approval.

5. Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment to a Provincial Team coaching or team staff position, individuals must:

Coaches who do not currently hold the required NCCP certification may still be considered for a coaching position, provided they are willing and able to complete the required training within the timelines established by BNS.

Coaching Certification Support

BNS is committed to supporting coach development and will provide financial assistance toward required NCCP certification.

BNS will cover 50% of the cost of approved NCCP certification requirements, with the coach responsible for the remaining 50%.

  • Observation of coaching practices
  • Adherence to BNS policies and expectations
  • Team organization and communication
  • Athlete development and overall program performance

Future coaching opportunities and appointments will be performance-based and will consider the overall needs and direction of the Provincial Team Program.

BNS reserves the right to make changes to coaching assignments before, during, or following a season where deemed necessary and in the best interests of the program.

9. Final Approval and Appointment

All Provincial Team coaching appointments are subject to final approval by BNS.

BNS reserves the right to:

  • Approve or decline any proposed coaching staff member
  • Request changes to proposed coaching staff
  • Require additional screening or certification
  • Make changes to coaching assignments when necessary
  • Remove an individual from a coaching position where performance, conduct, certification, screening, or other circumstances warrant such action

The final objective of the selection and appointment process is to ensure that each Provincial Team has a qualified, committed, and athlete-focused coaching staff that reflects the standards and values of Basketball Nova Scotia.
